How To Pick A Good Roommate

Ascent Property Management • Sep 12, 2022

Selecting a roommate can be daunting, especially if you don't know where to start. Today, we have some tips to help get you on the right track to finding your dream roommate.

Interview Them

Living with someone generally means seeing them regularly unless you have opposite schedules. Hard questions are important (we'll cover those in a moment) but fun topics are just as significant.

Hobbies, taste in music, and favorite movies are all great icebreakers to help you get to know your potential roommate better.

Ask The Hard Questions Up Front

Don't be shy about asking hard-hitting questions – you can be direct yet respectful when determining if you match each other's criteria. It may feel personal, but after all, your finances will be dependent on each other.

Here at Ascent Property Management, you'll have access to a separate roommate application to help keep your financial information confidential from your next potential roommate and vice versa.

Be Clear On Your Ground Rules

Selecting a good roommate comes down to setting proper expectations of living styles. If a sink full of dirty dishes drives you crazy, make sure your roommate feels the same!

Other questions can include their work and sleep schedule, how often they like to have guests over, or if they smoke.

Ask For References

Just as employers ask for references, you can do the same. Past landlords and housemates should be able to speak about their habits and any issues that came up in the past.

As Earth Day approaches, it's the perfect time to consider making eco-friendly updates to your rental property. Not only do these updates contribute to a healthier planet, but they can also save you some money in the long run! Energy-Efficient Lighting One of the simplest yet most impactful eco-friendly updates you can make is replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. LED bulbs consume significantly less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs, resulting in lower electricity bills and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, consider installing motion sensors or timers to automatically turn off lights when not in use, further conserving energy.
